Interesting facts about Depth of Field

Post by Paramvir Singh »

Depth of field doubles if you halve the focal length of the lens.

Depth of field halves if you double the focal length of the lens.

Depth of field doubles by stopping down two f-stops.

Depth of field halves by opening up two f-stops.

Just wanted to check something which i am not sure about anymore...I am not sure where i read this. Will try it some day and post the results.

for the same exposure, the image size being the same - for eg - a portfolio, depth of field remains the same irrespective of the focal length used. the change in focal length being offset by the distance of the subject to the film plane. And the 'apparent' shallowness is because of the change in perspective in higher focal lengths.

Karthik you are right.

for the same T-Stop, for the same image size, the depth of field is practically the same.
