In the two years since the first edition, DI has moved from being the new thing to the
established way for everything from movie grading and post production through to
deliverables. There are as many different approaches as there are DI houses and they
are probably all doing the right thing. It is a sign of mature technology that it can be
moulded to fit individual requirements.

In fact, the DI workflow is now increasingly being adopted across all areas of post
production, both film and video – longform and shortform. This is because the benefits
of the DI workflow (i.e. working at original resolution throughout the post production
process and grading in-context as the job demands rather than up front from the telecine
as has been traditional) have now become economically viable thanks to recent leaps
forward in DI technology.

The technology has become more refined with colour management enabling sign-offs
from viewing the graded digital images directly as projected onto a large screen. In other
words the digital image is now capable of being the point at which the final sign off is
made, reducing or entirely eliminating the need to do multiple film-outs for approval.
Increasingly, movies are now going straight from the negative DI film-out to release prints
or, of course, direct to digital cinemas.

The guide describes a realistic approach to the business and technology behind the
commercially viable DI environment based on the Quantel iQ and Pablo DI systems.
It is designed to be of practical use to those in, and involved with, the industry. As such
it describes solutions and workflows that have been proven to work well in the real world
of digital film production.
