SONY PMW-EX1: ProMax Takes a Closer Look

Sony has reached yet another milestone with the now-shipping PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX camcorder. The HD-only sub-$10,000 camera with three half-inch CMOS image sensors and solid-state-only recording is making waves in the industry. With the industry all abuzz about the camera, ProMax takes this opportunity to talk about some of the more interesting aspects of the camera and the post-production workflow.
Truly Progressive

Probably the most exciting feature about this camera is its ability to record in a number of formats, which include 1080i/P and 720P. And this is true progressive recording and playback. You asked for it, and Sony has more than answered the call.

Sensory Overload

Sony's new Exmor™ CMOS sensors are amazing. Add to that the fact that they are half-inch, and that they are true 1920x1080, and then multiply that times 3, and that's what you get with the PMW-EX1. This is what gives the camera the ability to work its magic in slow motion with its dedicated A-to-D converters, and that allow the camera to be both interlaced and progressive. This also means amazing performance in low light and a shallower depth of field than its predecessors.
