The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) will host its annual Open House and Live Internet Chat with many of the world’s most talented filmmakers on Saturday, Feb. 17, the day before the 21st Annual ASC Awards. The ASC Clubhouse (1782 N. Orange Dr., Hollywood) will be open for visitors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (PST), and the Internet chat will begin on the ASC Web site (www.theasc.com) at 12 p.m. (PST).
“The primary purpose of this annual celebration is to recognize and applaud the artistry of our peers,” says ASC President Daryn Okada. “We hope it will also inspire other cinematographers to pursue their dreams and help foster a broader appreciation of the role cinematographers play in the collaborative art of visual storytelling.”
Participants in the events are expected to include:
Michael Ballhaus, ASC - International Award
Allen Daviau, ASC - Lifetime Achievement Award
Gerald Hirschfeld, ASC – Presidents Award
Donald M. Morgan, ASC - Career Achievement Award in Television
Ron Howard - Board of Governors Award
The 2006 Feature Film nominees are Emmanuel Lubezki, ASC, AMC (Children of Men); Dick Pope, BSC (The Illusionist); Robert Richardson, ASC (The Good Shepherd); Dean Semler, ASC, ACS (Apocalypto); and Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC (The Black Dahlia).
Nominees in the Television Movie/Miniseries/Pilot category are Thomas Del Ruth, ASC (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip-Pilot); Adam Kane (Heroes-Pilot); Walt Lloyd, ASC (The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines); Bill Roe, ASC (Day Break-Pilot); and John Stokes (“Umney’s Last Case,” Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King).
Nominees in the Episodic Television category are Eagle Egilsson (“Darkroom,” CSI: Miami); Nathan Hope (“Killer,” CSI: Crime Scene Investigation); David Moxness (“Arrow,” Smallville); Bill Roe, ASC (“What If They Find Him,” Day Break); and Gale Tattersall (“Meaning,” House M.D.).
The ASC traces its roots to the dawn of the motion-picture industry in 1913, when the Cinema Club in New York and the Static Club in Los Angeles were organized by the first generation of cinematographers, who were literally inventing a new language. Fifteen members of those two clubs organized the ASC in January 1919. They wrote a charter dedicating the ASC to advancing the art and craft of telling stories with moving images. There are about 290 active members around the world today, and approximately 140 associate members from allied sectors of the industry.
